Walter Dean Myers
"a court officer came in and got us. When I went into the courtroom I saw a group of kids sitting in front. It looked like a junior high school class.
"once the trial acctualy begins there will be no talking" the teacher with them said. "this is a part of the American judicial system, and we have to respect every part of it."
when I look at the kids in the class, they turned away from me quickly. I sat down and looked straight ahead. It was easy to imagine myself sitting where they were sitting. looking at the back of the prisoner."

...This excerpt describes the respect Steve is starting to lose for himself. I used this picture to describe the situation and how easy things can fall apart. What I mean by this is that Steve is being accused of a robbery and possibly murder, he is frustrated because he knows he is innocent and doesn't want to spend the rest of his life in jail. This picture describes how easily things can fall apart because the fate of his future comes down to the decision of one person in the courtroom. This situation can reflect my flash fiction in a couple ways, one being hope. I believe that the man in my flash fiction and Steve Harmon from my novel "monster" both are losing hope because they either have little self respect or are losing self respect. The man from my flash fiction is losing hope because no one will respect him, but he has no respect for himself. Steve is losing hope in his trail and believes he's going to jail and he knows he's losing respect for himself, both of these situations just need a motivating incident. "It was easy to imagine myself sitting where they were sitting. looking at the back of the prisoner." this quotation describes the respect he is losing for himself, because he is slowly starting to convince himself he's a prisoner...
